“It is my deep belief that Cranio Sacral Therapy and all forms of therapeutic massage and body work are comprehensive health-enhancing therapies. They help the body strengthen itself and enhance the functioning of all the body’s physiological systems. Regular body work is as essential to health as changing the oil in your car is to its long term functioning. I’m committed to helping each individual achieve the highest level of health possible. In my mind, health is not a static concept but the ability of the body to adapt to, and recover, from external stressors.

Although all my sessions incorporate Cranio Sacral Therapy, my skill-set is full of many techniques including deep tissue, Swedish, neuromuscular, trigger point, and pregnancy massage; foot and hand reflexology; ear coning; acupressure; regional tissue release; zero balancing; myofascial work, and visceral work. I incorporate all of these techniques as needed and work together with my clients to determine what each one needs during each session. The purpose of my working with each person is to facilitate their understanding of their body and health. Within each of us is an "Inner Physician" who knows what’s out-of-balance and what needs to be done to restore our health. I hope to acquaint you with your "Inner Physician" so that you can work together to stay healthy. Below is a description of these techniques.”

CranioSacral Therapy
CST was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger following extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he served as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics.

CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.

By complementing the body's natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:

• Migraine Headaches
"At times, after my massage, I don't feel any stiffness or pain at all and forget that I had any previously. Those times are more and more frequent."

-W.S., New London, NH

• Chronic Neck and Back Pain
• Motor-Coordination Impairments
• Colic
• Autism
• Central Nervous System Disorders
• Orthopedic Problems
• Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
• Scoliosis
• Infantile Disorders
• Learning Disabilities
• Chronic Fatigue
• Emotional Difficulties
• Stress and Tension-Related Problems
• Fibromyalgia and other Connective-Tissue Disorders
• Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
• Neurovascular or Immune Disorders
• Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
• Post-Surgical Dysfunction

SomatoEmotional Release
(SER) is a therapeutic process that expands on the principles of CranioSacral Therapy to help rid the mind and body of the residual effects of trauma. Joint research efforts by Dr. John Upledger and biophysicist Dr. Zvi Karni led to the discovery that the body often retains (rather than dissipates) physical forces. This is often the result of an accident, injury, or emotional trauma. The dysfunctional area is isolated, creating what is called an "energy cyst". Although a reasonably healthy body can adapt to "energy cysts", extra energy is required to perform normal bodily functions. As time passes, the adaptive pattern of the body loses its effectiveness. Symptoms begin to appear, and over time, become more difficult to suppress. The SomatoEmotional Release process requires extreme sensitivity on the part of the therapist and a positive attitude and trust from the client/patient.

Deep Tissue Massage - With or without the use of hot stones.
Deep tissue massage is a very powerful healing modality.  It incorporates the theories of acupressure, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, and neuromuscular therapy.  Contrary to popular belief, deep tissue massage should not be extremely painful.  In order to allow the body to release old tension patterns, which are often below the level of our awareness, a firm pressure must be used which is not so hard that it activates the body’s defense mechanisms, yet deep enough to bring an end to the tension pattern. There is a delicate balance.  Each person has a different threshold and my job as a massage therapist is to be able to sense the correct pressure. I have been practicing deep tissue massage  for 14 years.  I have developed a sensitivity in my hands to sense the correct amount of pressure which will relax the muscles without causing them to tighten in defense from too much pressure.  The result for the client is a vigorous massage which while there may be some tenderness, produces a deeply relaxed feeling afterwards. Recently I have incorporated the use of hot stones.  I use the hot stones to  massage areas which seem resistant to relaxation.  The combination of the heat and the deep pressure seems to be very effective. I always combine my deep tissue massage sessions with the Cranio Sacral Therapy.   People have reported that they feel incredible relief.  Usually several sessions are required to change a problem.

Ear Coning
Ear coning or ‘ear candling’ is an age old home remedy used to remove excess ear wax, soothe the ears, relieve pain and itching from infections, and dry out any fluids in the inner ear canal.  Many clients have reported to me that their various allergies have decreased or been eliminated, their hearing has improved, their sinuses have cleared, their upper respiratory systems are generally healthier and they experience fewer colds or their colds are shorter in duration.  Ear coning involves the use of a hollow cloth ‘candle’ coated with wax.  The candle is placed through an aluminum pie tin to protect the client from burns. The tapered end of the candle is placed gently in the ear and the other end is lit.  Warm smoke travels down into the ear canal as well as into the inner ear and sinuses.  The warm smoke softens the wax and a “vacuum”  inside the candle, created by the lack of air, draws the wax up into the candle.  Usually 2-4 ear candles are used in each ear during the hour and a half session.  I recommend ear coning twice a year as preventative maintenance, in the autumn and the spring. If there are problems such as a feeling of blockage or decreased hearing,  I recommend sessions be done every couple of days until the problem resolves.  I have never had to do more than four sessions in a row in order to relieve a problem.

Visceral Manipulation
Visceral Manipulation was developed by French Osteopath, Jean-Pierre Barral. At optimal health, the relationship between the organs (viscera) and structures of the body (muscles, membranes, fasciae and bones) remains stable despite the body’s endless varieties of motion. But when one organ can’t move in harmony with its surrounding viscera due to abnormal tone, adhesions or displacement, it works against all the body’s organs and structures. This disharmony creates fixed, abnormal points of tension that the body is forced to move around. That chronic irritation, in turn, paves the way for disease and dysfunction.
Visceral Manipulation (VM) is a gentle hands-on therapy that works through the body’s visceral system (the heart, liver, intestines and other internal organs) to locate and alleviate these abnormal points of tension throughout the body.
VM employs specifically placed manual forces that work to encourage the normal mobility, tone and motion of the viscera and their connective tissues. Trained practitioners use the rhythmic motions of the visceral system to evaluate how abnormal forces interplay, overlap and affect the normal body forces at work. These gentle manipulations can potentially improve the functioning of individual organs, the systems the organs function within, and the structural integrity of the entire body.

Zero Balancing

Developed by Fritz Smith, MD in the early 1970s, Zero Balancing is a powerful body-mind therapy that uses skilled touch to address the relationship between energy and structures of the body. Following a protocol that typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes, the practitioner uses finger pressure and gentle traction on areas of tension in the bones, joints and soft tissue to create fulcrums, or points of balance, around which the body can relax and reorganize.

Zero Balancing focuses primarily on key joints of our skeleton that conduct and balance forces of gravity, posture and movement. By addressing the deepest and densest tissues of the body along with soft tissue and energy fields, Zero Balancing helps to clear blocks in the body’s energy flow, amplify vitality and contribute to better postural alignment. A Zero Balancing session leaves you with a wonderful feeling of inner harmony and organization.

“I have learned by observing my clients that half-hour and one-hour time sessions are usually too brief to receive the maximum benefit.  I prefer my sessions be for 1 1/2 hours.  However, due to the tough economic times and the impact it is having on all of us, I am going to offer half-hour, hour, and one and a half hour sessions.  I hope to encourage people to continue to reduce stress and take care of their health during a time when it is more necessary than ever.  Regular body work is as essential to health as changing the oil in your car is to its long term functioning.”
